Congratulations to the Winners
of the 5th Annual Maynard Amateur Photography Competition
Competition Overview
MEF was proud to sponsor the 5th Annual Amateur Photography Competition. The competition is a collaborative effort between MHS teacher, John Ogden, and the Maynard Education Foundation (MEF).
This year’s theme was Water (in any form) in Maynard with a composition theme of symmetry, frame within a frame, or the golden ratio. Approximately 30 students from Maynard High School submitted nearly 70 entries for the contest.
An independent panel comprised of local photographers and artists Priscilla Cotter, Erik Hansen, Brent Mathison, and Ann Stachowicz anonymously reviewed the students’ submissions. They selected the winning images based on their originality and/or creativity, composition, and use of light.
Competition winners will receive a framed copy of their work, gift cards, and their images are on display at Maynard High School.
Thank you to MHS teacher John Ogden and to the judges for generously donating their time and expertise to the competition. We are grateful for your support!
Judge's comments about the winning images include:
1st Place: Ryleigh Green
Composition theme: Frame within a frame
Judges Comment:
“I keep coming back to this image again and again. It’s not what one expects from an assignment of “Maynard + Water,” but it shows the underbelly of our little town. The mistreatment of the river, the decay behind the scenes, the new development and disappointments from past developers, it’s an essay in an image.
The framing of the structure from the new bridge adds another clever dimension.
We see Maynard’s past, present, and future in an all new way.“
2nd Place: Owen Wilde
Composition theme: Symmetry
Judges Comment:
“The almost-symmetry of this image is what I really love...the two trees equidistant from the dock, except the shape of the tree on the left has been altered by its broken limb; the T-shaped dock, except there is a bench on the left side; the house across the water offset just to the right of the line of the dock.”
3rd Place: Zoe Avery
Composition theme: Golden ratio
Judges Comment:
“Some of the other entries focused solely on the reflection of the mill. While that features prominently in this one, the symmetry of the overlapping concentric circles in the water is what draws me in.”
